After the reform and opening up, many temples in Shanghai resumed temple fairs and folk performances. Wang Baoya recalled that he bought cloth to make clothes himself and organized a waist drum team to take part in the temple fair parade. In 2008, with the approval of the State Council, temple fairs were listed as national intangible cultural heritage.
