In the 1970s and 1980s, glutinous rice balls, Chongming cakes and eight-treasure rice were all the favorite snacks for the Shanghainese. Zhang Xiaying in Gao Qiao Town still remembers the rice balls made of porridge and noodles as well as steamed cakes which were made by her mother. The eight-treasure rice with lard aroma even reminds people of the scene when they mixed rice with lard by themselves.
